Desaster

An army of hateful demons

For almost twenty years they poured poison and chaos in moulds of a frightening harshness, the proper dissonance of what the most primal shadows could create.
«666 - Satan's Soldiers Syndicate» is their new homage to the ones that hide below and Sataniac (vocals) has a strange pleasure in referring to Jorge Ribeiro de Castro what made them chose that path.

1 – Since 1989 (although it was in 1993 you had a first demo out, “The Fog of Avalon”), you’ve granted the underground such skilled demonstrations of a furious and hateful memorial towards Black/Death Metal. With this new release filled with strong rhythms and disturbed melodies do you feel you’ve given a more improved step in your artistic enhancement thus having the possibility of an even greater recognition of your work?

We are no musicians at all. We don’t want to demostrate something, we’re only interested in playing the music we love, without any doubt. So we pleased if people like the Desaster but if not we don’t care. But at the other hand we want to do better songs, sometimes it works, but that’s the decision of the listeners.

2 – Tell us how the creation process of the 10 songs in «666 – Satan Soldier’s Syndicate» went. Did you usually create music together or apart? I ask this due to the feeling evoked by those hymns of sibilant darkness that grows in us like plague…

Thank you man! There is no masterplan, Infernal came up with the riffs, or with the complete basic song and we decide together whats good and whats not…I throw in the lyrics…and we change and try til it works or till we hope it works, that’s all.

3 - How long was the recording process and how did you felt over there?

SSS was recorded in seven days in the Harrow Studios in Looser/NL. It came up very naturely, this time we have nearly no troubles at all, and the producer was very easy and relaxed while recording the desaster. Everything went fine.

4 – Was it easy to maintain the eerie, aggressive, extremely powerful ambience you whish to reflect in your music while in studio? Is the final product everything you expected to be?

I’m very satisfied with the songs, the lyrics, the sound and the artwork. And of course with the brutality and the blackening atmosphere. And of course the others too. Like I said before it has to come from the black heart and in this way there is nothing to expect. If you can’t do it in this way of passion it’s nothing worth at all. In all types of music.

5 – Do you feel your lyrics need to focus the same subjects since the band’s formation for your music to be respected? Have you ever felt you could differ a bit at a lyrical and a musical level for the sake of experimentation or would any other ideas appear only in parallel projects?

Sometimes I try to be a little sarcastic - and try to rhyme with the words in my lyrics. And the lyrics are not typical satanic, but filled with a lot of negative aggression to fit the music. Mostly inspired by my own infernal voices. We don’t like modern influences or erperimental shit in traditional music, so why should we do this shit for the Desaster. Tormentor and Infernal sometimes playing some more heavy metal styled shit, nothing really serious I think, and Tormi also did some riots with Metaluzifer and Decayed.

6 – You’ve had as guests on this release Proscriptor (Absu), A.A. Nemtheanga (Primordial) and Ashmedi (Melechesh). How the approach to them went and in which songs they seemed suited to appear?
Ashmedi did the guitar solo on Angel Extermination while the other two raised their voices with me in Tyrannizer. We played some shows with Primordial and we are in the same scene so we where already in contact long time before the idea to ask them for some apperance. No big deal…only asking some metalbrothers to help the album sounding more interessting.

7 – The cover for the Cd is somewhat simple, almost like a symbol for your music… Tell us about the conception of it…

We gave the title Satan’s Soldiers Syndicate to Kris Verwimp, and the result was the artwok. Yes you are right, maybe that’s more a kind of a symbol. Good idea, I take it for some other interviews…hahahah

8 – Which performance can one see in the 20 minute video in the limited edition of the «666 – Satan Soldier’s Syndicate»?

We played at a festival which was organized by our webmaster (www.total-desaster.de) and he banned the show to the cd…dvd…whatever. It’s more a little special for the first 1.000.000 copies. Only for the die hard supporters. Selbstverständllich!

9 – I’ve seen you live some years ago here in Portugal (Headbangers Fest) and found your music really great, although my neck didn’t… It was a spectacular show!!! How are your gigs nowadays? Do you tend to express your music in a somewhat raw approach or consider some theatrics can give them a even more powerful ambience so to grasp the audience’s attention?

We always needed the audience to create a good powerful “conversation” so I think nowadys we try even more to kick the ass of the people to feel the metalized blood runs the veins and smell the venomous stench. But in fact there are no theatrics elements in or show…hahahaha…Thanx for the compliment!

10 – Throughout your career you’ve had several Cd releases and re-releases, as well as some Lp and Tape releases… From a certain time, did you still had to approach the labels for it or you were given the chance by being contacted by them?

We were always contacted by the labels, I think. I’m in the band since 2001, and Metal Blade did, so that’s what I know for sure.

11 – Any plans being established, at this moment, for the future? For myself, I would like to hear your first releases (demos) re-recorded just for the sake of Metal’s History on a future Cd release… Are there any plans for a gig in Portugal? Hehe

Yes, we will play in Portugal in february next year I think! And I don’t want to re-record a complete demo, I don’t like to fuck up the memories of the old fans with a stupid new version. I hope the other Desaster’s agree with me…hahahha

12 – I thank you for your words. Shed us some final obscure ones…

Men and of course women please believe in hellfire! Surely better for own health!
